New homes available! On the borders of the Austin-Round Rock Metropolitan Area, there lies a quaint village called Hutto, Texas, which is full of neighborly charm. The quaint town of Hutto, Texas, is renowned as the “Hippo Capital of Texas.” It features a historic downtown brimming with interesting stores and eateries, as well as a self-guided hippo tour that perfectly encapsulates Hutto’s hippo-loving culture. Hutto is a small Texas Hill Country city with a lot to see and do, but it also has easy access to many of the best attractions in the Austin region. Hutto is only 30 miles from Austin’s downtown and a short drive from other well-known locations including Round Rock, Georgetown, and Pflugerville.
What’s going on with the hippos, you might be wondering at this point. A hippo allegedly escaped from a circus train that halted in Hutto in 1915, according to local tradition. The subsequent quest to catch the hippo would profoundly alter the community. The hippo had hidden itself in a nearby creek. The hippo became the high school’s mascot shortly after, and Hutto is now the only town in the US to have the animal as its symbol. As many as 4,000 hippo statues can be found all throughout the city, including Henrietta, a 14,000-pound concrete monument that can be found in Hutto’s Old Town.
You won’t just be occupied in Hutto by looking for these hippo statues, though. You can go on a hot air balloon ride to take in the beautiful Hill Country views, enjoy a leisurely picnic at Hutto Lake Park, or get some exercise on the three-mile Cottonwood Trail in addition to The Golf Club at Star Ranch, one of the best public golf courses in Texas, and the sights and flavors of Old Town. A Round Rock Express minor league game, played at Dell Diamond just a few minutes west of Hutto, is a great opportunity for sports fans to catch a look of the future stars of baseball.
Visit Hutto to take in the charm of the Hill Country if you’re looking for a peaceful retreat that’s not too far from the busy Austin area.
